YAPC::Europe 2011 in Riga is over
24/08/11 00:44 by Andrey Shitov (ash)
Dear YAPC::Europe attendees,
This year's conference is over. We spent a few days doing some final works and calculations, and can deliver some statistics now.
There were 278 people who attended the conference in Riga. This is a great number and we wish it become bigger next year. The attendees dinner was attended by 302 people. We'd like to thank all the 87 speakers of the conference and all the attendees who came to Riga and enjoyed the conference with us during that week. 48 people (not all unique) attended the teaching classes before and after the conference. 38 bottles of champagne were drunk during the last coffee break :-)
The videos recorded during the conference will be incrementally appearing on the yapc.tv website in the following weeks.
All in all, we think the conference was great and we look forward to see you in Frankfurt in August of 2012. Frankfurt team had a strong proposal and we wish them to organize even better event.
You are welcome to send your feedback directly to mail@yapceurope.lv.
Thank you very much for your interest in Perl and the conference. See you next year.
Andrew Shitov, Dan Makarov, Alex Kapranov, Dmitry Karasik, Sergey Zhavoronkov.

Survival-in-the-city guide
09/08/11 09:12 by Andrey Shitov (ash)
Dear YAPC::Europe attendees,
Let us deliver a small list of random things you might find useful while staying in Riga.
* Riga's official tourist site is liveriga.com.
Money
* Local currency is Latvian Lat (LVL, Ls). Up-to-date exchange rates are published on the conference site.
* ATM machines and terminals in the stores and shops easily accept international credit cards.
Transport
* There are a few taxi networks working in the city. The biggest one seems to be BalticTaxi. To call a cab, call 8500 from your mobile phone. If you fly with AirBaltic, you may buy taxi vouchers on board at 13 EUR (a bit cheaper than buying it in the airport).
* City centre is located 20 minutes by car from the airport. Taxi would cost 10 LVL.
* Riga railway station and bus station are located quite close to the Old Town, both are in 20-25 min walk distance from the conference venue.
* Public transport (bus, tram, trolleybus) use combined tickets, which you may buy in ticket machines located at bus stops (not every ones). There's also one at the exit of the airport. They call those tickets e-talons, and their logo is a big blue lowercase letter 'e' with four red arrows.
* There's also separation between type of transport you may use with e-talon, or you may buy tickets for all types (bus, tram, trolleybus). There are tickets for 1, 10, or 20 trips, or for 24 hours, 3 or 5 days. One time ticket costs 0.5 LVL, versatile 5-day one - 9.50 LVL.
* The detailed information on public transport routes can be found at rigamap.net.
Mobile
* There are three mobile operators: LMT, Bite, Tele2. Prepaid local SIM cards can be bought in the small shops, or, for example, on the forth floor of Galerija Centrs, the big store at the edge of Old Town (Audeju iela 16, 56.94789, 24.11284).
* 3G mobile internet is available from any operator, and it is quite fast: up to 5-7 Mbits/s, depending on the tariff. Tele2 sells cards for 2GB of traffic at 7.50 LVL, Bite offers hourly-based tariffs (0.7 LVL per hour). They also sell network-locked USB 3G modems which work with both Mac OS and Windows.
Beaches
* The closest see beaches are those located in Jurmala (to the west of Riga) and Vecaki (to the north). They are reachable by regional trains from Central station, travel time is about half-an-hour.
* Note that there is no single Jurmala station. There are a few stations along the beach; Dubulti and Majori are the central ones. Take train going to Dubulti or Tukums to get to Jurmala.
* Take train direction Carnikava, Saulkrasti, or Skulte to get to Vecaki.

The Fifth YAPC::Europe Newsletter
15/06/11 23:46 by Andrey Shitov (ash)
Dear YAPC::Europe attendees,
We had a two-month vacations and didn't send any newsletters. We hope you are quite hungry now due to the lack of news about the most important Perl event in Europe. To overcome the hunger we'll speak about food today :-)
There are great news.
Following a tradition (probably based on generic human being instincts) there are two official food parties around the conference. The pre-conference meeting and the attendees dinner.
Pre-conference meeting
In the evening before the main days of the conference, namely, the 14th of August (Sunday) we will be waiting you in the very centre of Riga, just in front of one of the Riga's place of interest, Rigas Doms.
If the weather is good (no rain), we'll sit'n'roam (or, in Modern Perl it should be written as sit::n::roam) at the street summer tables. In case of rain, there's a backup closely located place with a permanent rain protection roof.
Worth to mention that we have our brilliant (in fact, Platinum) sponsor, cPanel Inc., which made it possible to offer the attendees of pre-conference meeting a free beer or two! Just be on time, we'll start at 18:30 there. All the routes, maps and instructions will be sent to you before the conference.
Attendees dinner
In the evening of the second day of the conference, the 16th of August (Tuesday) we have the attendees dinner. It means that after the end of the talks we invite all of you to come to another Riga's famous place, Lido restaurant to have another beer and some food this time :-)
We'll try to make the dinner less formal so that we are not tied to small tables being forced to see the same people for a couple of hours. We'll do our best to achieve the most comfortable atmosphere for attendees chatting, talking and meeting.
Let us say that we have to thank our Platinum Sponsor, Booking.com B.V. for branding the dinner and make it free for the attendees (well, paid ones :-) and speakers.
You are welcome to bring your partner to the dinner, just make sure to pay for them before. We'll let you know how much you need to pay for the partner later.
If you have any special requirements (vegetarian, vegan, no fish, whatever), please let us know in advance so that we are more flexible. Just send us an e-mail to mail@yapceurope.lv right now.
OK, this is the end of today's newsletter, and we'll be back really soon.

Perl 6 hackathon
On the 13th of August (Saturday) we are hosting the Perl 6 hackathon.
The Perl 6 hackathon is a one day event for those who want to look at internals of Perl 6 and its development process. There will be people who are responsible for Perl 6 design, specification and implementation, and Rakudo developers. The hackathon will be held in a meeting room in the hotel located in Old Town. Snacks and beer included. Please add this talk to your personal schedule (click the star) if you are going to attend it so that we know which kind of room to book for it.
The Perl 6 hackathon is one of our delighted events: previously we had a very successful hackathon on Perl 6 in Kiev, and we are going to have one more this May during YAPC::Russia in Moscow.
The Perl 6 hackathon is free. All you need there are your laptop and a passion for Perl 6.

STAR SPEAKERS UPDATE
We are very happy to announce that Damian Conway is coming to YAPC::Europe 2011 in Riga!

We also will have three sessions of lightning talks, one per each conference day.
To submit a talk, please visit http://yapceurope.lv/ye2011/newtalk and fill the form. We kindly request to carefully select target audience (beginner, intermediate, advanced, or any): it will help potential attendees to decide if they are going to attend the talk.

Talks given there cover all the basic areas of knowledge which are the core of modern Perl: CPAN, useful modules, data structures, getting data in and out, regular expressions, documentation and testing.
