UBS is a large Swiss bank. Four years ago the bank decided to replace some of its aging systems. Perl was integral to the success of this project. I'll talk about the role Perl played in the project, about some of the problems that were faced and the solutions that were implemented.

I'll also look at some of reasons why Perl was chosen for this project, the benefits it brought and also the associated problems. I'll talk about some of the trade offs that lead to Perl being used in some circumstances but not in others, and some of the reasons why Perl isn't being more widely used.
